Ninoy Aquino: A fallen grain on tarmac bears fruit

By
THE FUNERAL THAT STUNNED THE WORLD The funeral of Sen. Ninoy Aquino Jr. was held on Aug. 31 10 days after his assassination on the tarmac of the Manila international airport. It took 11 hours for the procession to reach Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque from Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City. Veteran photojournalist Joe Arazas provided the Inquirer with this unpublished black-and-white photo of the funeral march, which has been compared to that of India’s Mahatma Gandhi. Note his son Noynoy now President (in shades, at left). Arazas was then working for the state-run Philippine News Agency, which explains why the photo was never used.

Each year, we gather at the Philippine Consulate to celebrate two special events that are somehow connected or related to each other.
