Miners turn forest protectors

This photo taken last Aug. 10 shows the impunity with which logging continues despite an executive order issued by President Aquino that banned all commercial logging in natural and residual forests. These logs are made to float in the Ihawan River in Loreto, Agusan del Sur, in Barangay Nueva Gracia. They are to be transported to the Agusan River, passing by a militia camp near the river bend. All their lives, they were small-scale miners until last year, when they were turned into forest guards of the Mt. Magdiwata watershed in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

More soldiers deployed to guard forests

The Army is deploying more soldiers to guard the forests in Mindanao, to help secure government forest rangers who fall victim to well-armed illegal loggers, Army chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Bautista said on Saturday.
