Wounded, mentally ill man detained for Belmonte ambush freed

Police authorities in Misamis Oriental arrested a man, who had a wound in the thigh, on suspicion of being involved in the Dec. 11 ambush on Iligan City Rep. Vicente Belmonte Jr., only to free him later.

“It was political,” Iligan City lone district Representative Vicente “Varf” Belmonte said on Thursday when asked what could be the motive behind Thursday afternoon’s ambush here that injured him and killed his two drivers and two police escorts.

Politician pleads guilty to cocaine charge, takes leave

District of Columbia court records show charges against Radel were filed Tuesday. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington says the cocaine possession charge, a misdemeanor, carries a statutory maximum of 6 months in prison and a fine of $1,000. Radel was arrested on Oct. 29, according to court records. AP

A Florida congressman said Wednesday he was taking a leave of absence from Congress and donating his salary to charity after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and receiving a sentence of a year’s probation.
