9 die in Negros Occidental ambush

Gunmen hiding in a sugarcane field ambushed early Sunday a truckload of policemen and village guards, killing nine and wounding nine others in a hinterland village at La Castellana town, 28 kilometers south of here.

Death toll in strong quake rises to 40

At least 40 persons, including a nine-year-old girl, died in Negros Oriental during the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the province and other areas shortly before noon Monday, local authorities here said.
