A court has directed the warden of the Quezon City Jail to have doctors examine, within the confines of the jailhouse, a member of the Ampatuan clan who is among the accused in the Maguindanao massacre case and has asked to be allowed to check into a government hospital for a medical checkup.

In May 2012, 314 out of the 415 jails in the country were congested, with a congestion rate of 318 percent, according to data from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. The jails had a total population of 66,908 during the period while the ideal capacity was 51,518. The same data showed that during that period, 92 percent of jails in the National Capital Region were congested.
