Government troops did not violate a ceasefire with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Mindanao as a top official said the recent movements in two Maguindanao towns were meant as a preemptive move against possible attacks from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.
An escalation of fighting between the Army and a breakaway Moro rebel group in the provinces of Maguindanao and North Cotabato killed 18 people in a single day of violence, the military said on Tuesday.
Four Moro rebels were killed while two soldiers were wounded when government forces and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) members clashed anew in Maguindanao province on Monday.

A member of the renegade Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was killed in a clash with government forces after an attack on a banana plantation in North Cotabato, on Sunday, police said.
The military has said it provided the intelligence report that warned of terror attacks in this city, which Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II and Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had discussed last week.
