LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA?Dec. 25 six years ago was the saddest Christmas Glen Malabanan and her family ever had.
Glen, 25, and now deputy secretary general of human rights group Karapatan-Southern Tagalog, recalled that on Dec. 23 that year her father, Romy, was shot dead at around 9 a.m. while waiting for a tricycle that would bring him to the municipal hall where he worked as a staff of the mayor.
Glen said the bullet entered above Romy?s lip and exited at the back of his skull.
The lone assassin calmly walked away then rode a motorcycle parked a few meters away.
Not far from the crime scene, a police mobile approached and drove Romy?s body to a nearby hospital.
Romy, 42, was secretary general of Bayan Muna-Bay and chair of the labor group Pagkakaisa?t Ugnayan ng mga Manggagawa sa Laguna (Pumalag).
Romy was buried on Dec. 30. Police investigation did not prosper and the suspect remained free despite an artist?s sketch of the killer based on the account of Glen?s brother.
Glen took part in various dialogues and investigations at the House of Representatives but to no avail.
The killing of Glen?s father was among the cases studied by United Nations Special Rapporteur Philip Alston whose report said that the military and the Arroyo government were culpable for human rights violations in the Philippines.
When Glen graduated from college in 2006, she decided to seek justice for her father full-time and became a staff member of Karapatan-Southern Tagalog.
