Police step up security for Clinton visit

MANILA, Philippines?Metro Manila policemen are set to double their efforts in providing security for the official visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday, National Capital chief Director Roberto Rosales said Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rosales met with three officials from the regional security office of the US Embassy to iron out the kinks in the security arrangements of Clinton?s visit.

?So far, we don?t have the details about her security. We will still ask for her itinerary so we could adjust how many policemen we would deploy,? he said hours before the closed door meeting.

The Metro Manila police chief has yet to give the exact figure of police deployment.

?We will make sure that there are no disruptions during her visit. Surely, our efforts in providing necessary security measures will be doubled,? he said.

Rosales said they are now looking into rallies and demonstrations in advance. ?But that is not something that we can stop.?

Asked if the Monday twin explosions that hit the headquarters of San Miguel Corp. (SMC) in Mandaluyong City and Puregold Supermarket on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City have affected Clinton?s visit.

?They didn?t cancel her visit, so, most likely (Clinton?s party) has its own assessment (on the explosions),? he said.

For Rosales, the bombings were not terrorism attacks since those behind had no intention to hurt people.

?What we see based on investigations, the bombers only intend to sow fear,? he said.
