ILOILO CITY, Philippines—One of the suspects in the May 16 robbery and massacre at the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) branch in Cabuyao town, Laguna, was nabbed by the police in an Antique town Sunday night.
Antique police director Senior Supt. Ren Darroca said the policemen arrested Eugenio Hilario, 34, at his house in Barangay Trinidad in San Remigio town, 21 km northeast of the capital town of San Jose in Antique.
Hilario tried to fight back by holding hostage his 11-year-old niece but a member of the raiding team shot the suspect in the left leg, Darroca said in a telephone interview on Tuesday.
The police confiscated a .38 caliber pistol from Hilario who was confined at the Angel Salazar General Memorial Hospital in San Jose.
The police arrested Hilario, a resident of San Remigio, by virtue of a warrant of arrest for robbery with multiple homicide issued by the Biñan Laguna Regional Trial Court dated Sept. 19, 2008.
Darroca said the police received a tip that Hilario had come home prompting the raid.
Ten people had died including nine bank employees when robbers stormed the RCBC bank in one of the bloodiest robberies in the country’s history. The other fatality was a bank client.
The robbers had emptied the bank’s vaults before shooting the victims.
