MANILA, Philippines?(UPDATE) Over 2,800 passengers were stranded in various ports in Southern Luzon following the cancellation of sea voyage in the region, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Friday.
This as Typhoon ?Santi? (international codename: Mirinae), packing gusts of up to 185 kilometers (115 miles) an hour and carrying vast amounts of water, threatens to be the third killer storm to strike Luzon in just over a month.
As of 12 noon Friday, a total of 2,867 passengers were stranded in various ports of Regions 4-A, 4-B and 5, the NDCC said.
In Batangas City port, 897 passengers were marooned, together with 63 trucks, 25 vessels and 22 cars; in San Jose port also in Batangas, 150 passengers and 33 trucks were stranded; in Lucena City, 430 passengers and 26 trucks and in Puerto real Quezon, 122 passengers were also marooned.
In Calapan City, Mindoro, 379 passengers and 49 trucks were stranded, 310 passengers, six trucks and four vessels were also marooned in Romblon.
In the port of Tabaco, Albay, 579 passengers, 19 trucks, 15 cars, four passenger buses and five vessels were stranded, the NDCC said.
The Philippine Coast Guard barred ships from leaving the ports in areas where storm signals have been hoisted on order of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The Philippines has a poor record of sea safety.
