According to the latest statistics from the Department of Education, during school year 2006-2007, there were around 12 million elementary students and 5 million high school students enrolled in public schools nationwide.

During the same school year, there were 343,646 elementary public school teachers and 128,191 secondary public school teachers – for a teacher-student ratio of 1:35 and 1:39, respectively.

In 2006-2007, the ratio of classrooms to students was 1:50 on a double shift basis, according to the figures from DepEd. Some 14,000 new classrooms were constructed in 2006, and around 15,000 were built in 2007. Inquirer Research
