CALAMBA CITY ? A personal secretary of the vice mayor of Tanauan City in Batangas was killed by a lone gunman outside a restaurant here shortly after lunch on Sunday, police said.
Batangas police director Senior Supt. David Quimio said Paul Mendoza, 44, was shot in the chest after attending a function at about 1 p.m.
Police were looking at two possible reasons behind the killing ? politics and a love triangle ? Quimio said in a phone interview.
Apart from being an aide to Julius Caesar Platon II, vice mayor of Tanauan, Mendoza was the executive assistant of former Mayor Alfredo Corona.
Medel Manalo, first cousin of Mendoza, said in a phone interview that the victim had no enemies.
?Though we still don?t have evidence, we have suspicion that politics was the motive in the killing,? he said.
Manalo said Mendoza was an active organizer of Katapat (Kalipunan ng mga Tanaueño para sa Tunay na Tinig ng Tao), an organization that exposed the alleged election anomalies of incumbent Mayor Sonia Torres-Aquino.
Aquino, owner of Yazaki-Torres Corp., defeated Corona in the 2007 elections.
Corona won the mayoral elections in 2004, but the Commission on Elections declared Aquino the rightful winner on Dec. 22, 2005.
