MANILA, Philippines? The Senate has deferred announcing the results of its committee reorganization after majority senators failed to resolve Wednesday the issue of who would head three hotly contested committees.
The Senate was supposed to announce on Wednesday the chairmanships of the non-contentious committees.
However, the chamber decided to adjourn altogether after the senators belonging to the majority bloc were unable to resolve the chairmanship of the blue ribbon, public services and energy committees following a two-hour caucus, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III told reporters.
?We will let the Senate President announce the agreements arrived at on Monday,? he said.
It was agreed at the caucus that Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile be the one to finalize and decide the chairmanship of committees contested by the ?general majority group,? while it would be left to the Liberal Party (LP) senators to decide among themselves the chairmanship of the committees that they are interested in.
This means that Enrile will decide who will head the public services and energy committees, and the LP senators, the blue ribbon committee.
Senators Ramon Revilla Jr. and Ralph Recto want to head the public services committee while Sen. Loren Legarda and Sen. TG Guingona both want the energy committee.
The blue ribbon committee is being contested by Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Guingona, who are both LP members.
Sotto described the conduct of the caucus as ?calm? and ?warm?. He said he expected things would be resolved in time for Monday?s session.
Some senators belonging to a newly formed group in the Senate?made up of the 13 senators, or ?the majority of the super-majority? of 21 senators?who supported Enrile?s Senate presidential bid?had on Tuesday demanded an equitable distribution of committee chairmanships after the four LP senators successfully took and continued to seek key committees and even secondary committees.
Revilla told reporters he was miffed when Recto asked him to be a member of the public services committee, which he headed in the last Congress and is again aspiring to head.
He said the committee ?belongs to me? as agreed upon earlier by the majority coalition.
The public services committee tackles franchises, water and toll fees, among others.
Recto, who has already reportedly bagged the ways and means committee, said he was interested in the public services committee ?basically to further job creation?.
?I am willing to work with any senator, including Bong Revilla. He is the former chairman of the committee and I am sure he knows a lot about this committee. I am sure we can work together,? Recto told reporters.
He said he would leave it to Enrile to resolve the matter. Christine O. Avendaño
