Singson son in HK jail; but we’re in Mongolia, says his dad

HONG KONG?Ronald Verzosa Singson has been accused of trafficking in dangerous drugs in Hong Kong and is scheduled to appear at the Tsuen Wan court on Aug. 19.

Singson, 41, was arrested on July 11 at the Customs Arrival Hall of Chek Lap Kok International Airport, with 26.1 grams of cocaine and two tablets of diazepam (a sedative, marketed as Valium), according to court records.

The records also showed that Principal Magistrate Ernest Lin rejected Singson?s application for bail, and that the Filipino national has been detained since.

Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis ?Chavit? Singson has denied that the accused is his son, a reelected congressman of the first district of Ilocos Sur and a promoter of big foreign concerts in Manila.

Asked about the report, Representative Singson?s business partner, actor Jomari Yllana, told the Inquirer that he spoke by phone to the governor, who, he said, told him that Ronald was ?on his way back to Manila and will make an official statement.?

Chavit Singson said he and his son Ronald were in Mongolia.

According to Comelec records, the middle name of Representative Singson is Verzosa?which has a slightly different spelling from the Ronald Versoza Singson arrested in Hong Kong.

JM Rodriguez, director of Channel V, a cable music station that Ronald owns, also said father and son were in Mongolia and would be ?away for a month.?

Mistaken identity?

The Ronald Versoza Singson nabbed in Hong Kong appeared in court on Thursday, July 22, but has yet to enter his plea.

The charge sheet obtained from the HK Judiciary Press and Public Relations office specified that this Singson was arrested at the baggage examination counter N7. It did not indicate, however, whether he had a companion, which flight he had taken, and where the flight originated.

A Hong Kong source said suspects of this type of offense were usually sent to Lai Chi Kok Correctional Institution. The same source described Singson as ?short, English-speaking, and the owner of a resort and a television station in the Philippines.?

Yllana confirmed that his partner, the governor?s son, had been Hong Kong-bound after the last concert they produced, ?Usher in Manila,? staged July 9 at the Mall of Asia grounds. Yllana said the last time he saw Ronald was at the after-party that night.

?I was supposed to fly to Hong Kong with him but I could not leave because I had a scheduled [movie] shoot,? the actor told the Inquirer.

Not true, says girlfriend

Representative Singson is affiliated with Lakas-CMD and is a second-term lawmaker. He won in the last election against Bertrand ?Trandy? Baterina of the Liberal Party.

He once filed a bill that sought the immediate disposal and destruction of confiscated, seized or surrendered dangerous drugs and paraphernalia. He has been quoted as saying, ?Dangerous drugs are one of today?s most serious social ills.?

The politician-promoter?s rumored girlfriend, actress Lovi Poe, sent this text message to the Inquirer through her manager, Leo Dominguez: ?The Ronald Singson issue is not true. I am surprised. He is on his way home to Manila. Please wait for his statement.? With a report from Pocholo Concepcion
