MANILA, Philippines--A motorist who said he was irked by the gridlock on Edsa Saturday went against the traffic flow and rammed into more than 30 cars and motorcycles in the process.
Police said he also ran into and injured three personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
Police eventually arrested the driver, who identified himself as Tomas Antiawan and claimed to be a former soldier, after a chase on the northbound Edsa flyover near Corinthian Gardens just after 5 p.m.
?I went against the traffic flow because I couldn?t stand the traffic jam. I was planning to go to Crame but the traffic was terrible,? Antiawan said in Filipino.
Police from the Project 4 station said they were monitoring traffic near the People Power monument when they saw Antiawan, in a red Isuzu Highlander, suddenly make a U-turn near Corinthian Gardens and head the wrong way on the northbound lane of Edsa.
?We chased after him and caught up with him on the flyover. He didn?t seem drunk, though,? said SPO4 Bonifacio Rioflondo.
The driver?s white shirt was bloodstained due to cuts on his head he suffered when he rammed the other vehicles.
Antiawan hit 26 cars and six motorcycles. The drivers of the vehicles pulled them over by the Corinthian Gardens gate and along White Plains Avenue in Quezon City.
Rioflondo said Antiawan was brought to the Quezon City Police District?s Traffic Enforcement Unit for investigation.
?He will probably be charged with reckless imprudence,? the policeman said.
One of the motorists whose car was damaged said the wrong-way driver plowed into their cars without warning.
?He crashed into all the cars in his rush,? said Nelson Pagdanganan, who was driving a Toyota Innova, in Filipino.
The damaged vehicles included Toyota Innovas, Ford Explorers, Toyota Vioses and a Mercedes Benz van.
Weekend roadwork on Edsa is expected to cause traffic jams for the next few months.
