MANILA, Philippines? The prospect of having a ?Saint Cory? is not an impossible dream, said a Jesuit priest Sunday on the eve of Aquino?s 77th birth anniversary.
Corazon Aquino?s name may be brought up for consideration for sainthood within five years?or less?if the Vatican pushes it, said Rev. Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ.
?The decision is up to God,? the priest said in his homily during the Mass celebrated in Aquino?s honor at the EDSA Shrine chapel Sunday.
Sen. Benigno ?Noynoy? Aquino III said people would consider him ?biased,? but he believes his mother embodied the Church?s teachings of a true servant leader.
?We all saw how she completely surrendered to her faith. She had full trust in God and many of her decisions were guided by prayer,? he said in an interview after the Mass.
Noynoy?s eyes welled up as he talked about missing his mother, who died in August last year after battling colon cancer.
?I live in her house. And every night we use the dining table as the conference table. That?s in the kitchen where she used to cook. Cooking was her hobby ? Those are our memories. There are parts you want to remember, and parts you don?t want to remember,? he said in Filipino.
Noynoy, along with sisters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and Viel Aquino-Dee, attended the noontime Mass at the chapel, along with family members and supporters clad in Aquino?s trademark yellow. The Aquino siblings, however, were dressed in black, except for Viel, who wore beige.
Ballsy said the EDSA Shrine, site of the two People Power revolts that ousted a sitting president in 1986 and 2001, was very special to her mother, as she always felt the warmth and love of the EDSA Shrine community.
In his homily, Arevalo said the push for an Aquino sainthood was not surprising, considering how the late President had led her life and how she was able to marry her faith with her brand of governance.
?In centuries past, we had canonized kings. We had canonized leaders. Is it possible to [do] this again?? he said.
Arevalo said that in the recent past, very few political leaders had risen to sainthood, and that he believed the possibility of Aquino getting beatified was not far-fetched at all.
?When five years are done, unless the Vatican pushes it, we may be able to bring Cory?s name also for consideration,? he said.
Noynoy said while he personally approved of moves for a Cory Aquino beatification, he said the Aquino clan would not involve itself in the process.
?I?m very biased. I think my mother deserves it, but I don?t think I should be the main proponent,? he told reporters after Mass.
Addressing the churchgoers after the Mass, Noynoy said his mother was a constant source of inspiration, not only for the family, but for the Filipino people.
?It is during these trying times, when the democracy hangs in the balance, that I feel her absence the most,? he said.
