MANILA, Philippines ? The country may be enjoying a respite from devastating typhoons, but it may be rainy for Metro Manila, parts of Luzon and the Visayas through the weekend.
The northeast monsoon is the reason for the rainy weather, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Fourteen flights to and from the Cagayan Valley and Tacloban City were canceled at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Thursday because of bad weather caused by the northeast monsoon.
The northeast monsoon refers to the cold seasonal winds blowing in from the northern hemisphere beginning October or November and ending in March.
?The rain showers we are getting is the result of the northeast monsoon. There is no tropical cyclone affecting the country,? said weather forecaster Joel Jesusa.
In the latest weather update, PAGASA said Central and southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms.
These conditions could develop into widespread rain over the eastern sections of these areas which may trigger flashfloods and landslides, PAGASA said.
Metro Manila, Subic, Clark and Tagaytay will have cloudy skies with rain showers on Friday and partly cloudy skies to at-times-cloudy with isolated rain showers from Saturday to Monday, PAGASA said.
Temperatures in Metro Manila will range from 22 degrees to 32 degrees Celsius.
The waters of Manila Bay will be moderate to rough, the weather bureau said.
Tuguegarao, Laoag and Baguio will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers. Forecast temperatures for Baguio will range from 15 degrees to 24 degrees Celsius.
Legazpi City will have cloudy weather with rain showers and thunderstorms from Friday to Saturday.
Iloilo City, Metro Cebu and Tacloban City will also have cloudy weather with rainshowers on Friday and mostly cloudy weather with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday.
Cagayan de Oro, Metro Davao and Zamboanga City will have mostly cloudy weather with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms until the weekend.
PAGASA warned residents living in the coastal areas of northern, Central and southern Luzon against big waves because of strong-to-gale-force winds associated with the northeast monsoon.
In an advisory at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Manila International Airport Authority said two Cebu Pacific Air flights to Tuguegarao, Cagayan, and another flight to Cauayan, Isabela, were canceled. Consequently, the return trips to Manila from those places were also canceled.
International flights were also affected. At Terminal 1, the arrival of a Royal Dutch Airlines flight from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and a China Airlines flight from Kaoshiung, Taiwan, were delayed by about three hours.
