`Pepeng’ death toll reaches 375, says NDCC

MANILA, Philippines ? (UPDATE) The death toll due to typhoon Pepeng (international name: Parma) reached 375 as of Wednesday, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said.

In a statement, the NDCC said that of the number, 287 died due to landslides in Baguio City, La Trinidad, Ifugao, and Mt. province in the Cordillera Autonomous Region.

Region 1 had 75 confirmed fatalities while regions 3, 4-A and 5 had eight, one and four reported deaths, respectively. Majority of the fatalities in these regions were due to drowning, the NDCC said.

Reported injuries have remained at 185 casualties, while 48 others are still missing, the NDCC said.

Estimated number of affected persons has now reached 675,000 families or 3.2 million persons while estimated cost of damages to infrastructure has reached P1.607 billion while damage to agriculture is pegged at P6.532 billion, the NDCC said.

?Road clearings and restoration of basic communication facilities and infrastructures also continue to allow the rapid provision of relief goods in Northern Luzon,? the NDCC added.

Among the roads being cleared is the Halsema Highway, which connects Baguio City to Mt. Province and other provinces in the region.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Air Force has deployed air assets and personnel to aid in the transport rescue and relief operations, and has recorded 112 soties and transported a total of 88,777 pounds of relief goods, the NDCC said.

?Coordination among government agencies continues in order to facilitate an efficient disaster response system that will attend to the needs of our countrymen in various areas hit by typhoon Pepeng. The public is encouraged to support all efforts from various sectors and help assist our countrymen towards recovery from this crisis,? the NDCC said.
