Estrada to fight Cha-cha ‘to the hilt’

MANILA, Philippines—If President Macapagal-Arroyo is mobilizing her allies to push for Charter change through a constituent assembly, her deposed predecessor is prepared to give her a fight.

“Lalabanan ko ’yan. I will fight it to the hilt. We will go all out [against it],” Joseph Estrada said Friday on the sidelines of the birthday celebration of his close political ally, Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco, at the newly rehabilitated Navotas Sports Complex.

Estrada said the opposition would not allow any move to amend the Constitution in order to extend Ms Arroyo’s term beyond 2010.

“We are prepared to block it all the way. I will take it to the streets and ask the people,” he said.

Estrada expressed confidence that the Filipino people were on his side in this issue. Beverly T. Natividad
