SAGADA, MT. PROVINCE -- Calls for an end to terrorism in the world reverberated in this tourist town on Friday as townsfolk buried Zennia Aguilan, a Sagada native who was killed in a terror attack in Afghanistan 12 days ago.
Aguilan, 31, a physical therapist, was killed with five others on Jan. 14 when insurgents stormed the Serena Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she worked as a spa supervisor.
During the funeral Mass, Aguilan’s mother, Herminia, called on the people to pray for an end to the terrorist attacks that have claimed many lives, including Filipinos’.
“We cannot go to Afghanistan to march as a people of Sagada to condemn terrorism. What we can do is make our call for peace reach Afghanistan,” she said.
It was raining when they buried Aguilan. Mourners sang “Auld Lang Syne” as her casket was brought to her final resting place.
The elders conducted a traditional cleansing ritual called “chaw-es” before her body arrived here. A pig and a chicken were butchered for the ritual.
Aguilan was described as adventurous. But her friends said they were shocked when they read in her Friendster account that she was pursuing a career in Afghanistan.
On the account, Aguilan quoted a line from British author Douglas Adams: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have gone where I needed to be.” Desiree Caluza, Inquirer Northern Luzon
