Beware of Macau jobs

THE DEPARTMENT of Foreign Affairs has warned job seekers against illegal recruiters claiming to be agents of a new hotel in Macau. The Philippine Consulate General in Macau told DFA it had been informed by Galaxy Entertainment Group, the operator of a new hotel in Macau, of cases of fraud involving recruitment of workers by individuals claiming to be the group?s agent. Galaxy clarified it had never appointed any agent, other than Ikon Solutions Asia Inc., to recruit staff on their behalf in the Philippines. Tina G. Santos

Charred inmates named

THE TWO inmates who were charred to death on Friday following a fire inside the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City were identified yesterday. Eduardo Solis, 60, and Lito Amaya, 21, both of Negros Oriental were identified after they went missing in a roll call in the building, Bureau of Corrections Director Ernesto Diokno said. Solis was detained for theft while Amaya was imprisoned for homicide. Penelope Endozo

Shooting probe welcomed

Residents of a disputed property in Caloocan City welcomed a congressional probe proposed by militant lawmakers into alleged unwarranted shooting incidents in the area. Resolution No. 1236 seeks to conduct an inquiry into the alleged ?unlawful and violent demolition of houses? in Pangarap Village, North Caloocan. Some 7,000 families have accused Carmel Development Inc., and its security agency Securicor, of employing scare tactics and intimidation to evict them from a 156-hectare piece of land. Gregorio Ma. Araneta III?s CDI won ownership of the disputed property in February this year, when the Supreme Court declared as unconstitutional Presidential Decree No. 923, which granted some 2,000 families ownership of the land in 1974.
