Hazing death probe ordered
MAKATI Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. yesterday ordered the city police to immediately investigate the alleged hazing death of a student of the University of Makati. The victim, whom sources identified as Carl Intia, about 19 to 20 years old and a building and wiring management student at UMak?s College of Technology Management, reportedly died while undergoing hazing rites being conducted by at least 15 Alpha Phi Omega fraternity members last Saturday in Barangay San Antonio, Makati. In a press briefing, Binay directed city police chief, Senior Supt. Froilan Bonifacio, to immediately take action against those who participated in the hazing rites, regardless of the organization involved. Tina G. Santos
Red Cross journalism tilt set
THE INTERNATIONAL Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, has launched a competition to recognize stories that best illustrate the humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts. The ?Red Cross Award for Humanitarian Reporting 2011? is open to all print/online, television and radio journalists who have published or aired insightful news reports, features or documentaries on the armed-conflict situation in the Philippines, said Anastasia Isyuk, ICRC communication coordinator. Entries must be sent to any of the following PACE member-schools: Central Luzon State University, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; St. Scholastica?s College, Manila; Cebu Technological University, Cebu City; and Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City. Deadline for nominations is March 12, 2011. The names of the awardees will be announced on May 8, 2011, Red Cross Day. Tamano to speak at support group?s monthly meet
FORMER United Opposition spokesperson and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila president Adel Tamano will be the guest speaker at the Center for Possibilities Inc.?s monthly parent support group meeting on Aug. 25. Tamano will talk about the joys of raising his son, Santi, who has autism.
