MANILA, Philippines? The Manila government on Saturday warned the public against buying fish allegedly dyed with artificial coloring to make it appear fresh.
The warning came after the city?s Veterinary Inspection Board (VIB) seized at least 40 kilos of ?dalagang bukid? that were reportedly soaked in artificial coloring at the Antipolo Market in Blumentritt.
City Administrator Jesus Mari Marzan said the fish were confiscated after members of the VIB inspected fish stalls at the wet market.
Joselito Diaz, team leader of the VIB Special Meat Squad, apparently noticed the unusually dark red color of fish sold by vendor Zenaida dela Cruz.
When confronted, Dela Cruz allegedly admitted that they were using food coloring to make her fish for sale appear fresh.
Citing health risks posed by the illegal practice, Marzan said Dela Cruz will no longer be permitted to sell in the area.
He added that the vendor will be charged with violation of City Ordinance 1600 Section 998 or violating the law on adulteration of commercial products.
Marzan also assured the public that they would continue to monitor markets in the city to protect residents and consumers against unscrupulous traders. Tina G. Santos
