MANILA, Philippines?Bureau of Customs agents have seized 12 cargo containers filled with P54-million worth of misdeclared items ranging from high-end electronic products to tiles and frozen chicken.
The shipments were intercepted as these were being taken out of the Port of Manila and Manila International Container Port (MICP), Customs Commissioner Napoleon L. Morales told reporters Thursday.
However, he did not say when the cargos were seized.
The biggest among the haul was a 40-foot container filled with plasma and LCD television sets, cameras, Sony Portable PlayStations (PSPs), Sony PlayStation3 cordless controllers, computer processors, Panasonic integrated telephone system, JVC DVD receiver with monitor and other high-end electronic gadgets.
The value of the cargo was estimated at P30 million. It had been declared to contain 1,117 packages of television accessories, DVD players and gimp yarn.
In addition, seven 20-foot containers were found filled with tiles estimated at a total of P6 million instead of 5,600 cartons of bathroom fixtures.
Both shipments?the cargo of high-end electronic equipment and tiles?from Singapore were consigned to Quick Flo Trading.
Morales said they have put out an alert for the consignee?s other shipments while customs personnel who handled the cargoes have been placed under investigation.
?We have to investigate our own men to weed out those who are colluding with these importers to cheat the government,? he said.
Also seized were four 40-foot containers of frozen chicken leg quarters which arrived at the North Harbor from the United States.
The shipment, consigned to Regency Marketing Corp., had been declared as 6,532 cases of frozen chicken leg quarters and sliced potatoes.
