MANILA, Philippines ? The Muntinlupa City government has imposed a ban on smoking in all public places and the sale of tobacco products to minors.
Mayor Aldrin San Pedro recently signed the ordinance which prohibits smoking in all establishments, government offices and public utility vehicles, making it the second city in the country to enforce a ban for this year.
Ordinance 10-110, authored by Councilor Ma. Luisa Echavez, places restrictions on tobacco use among minors while designating smoking areas in establishments for people who can?t kick the habit.
Smokers caught outside designated smoking areas, as well as business establishments who fail to post notices about the smoking ban, face a fine ranging from P500 to P10,000. Their business permits can also be revoked upon the discretion of city hall.
The ordinance will take effect after 60 days to give local officials enough time to inform residents and allow businesses and offices to put up smoking areas.
Last month, the Davao City government enforced a smoking ban in the area, a move that earned praises from the international anti-smoking community.
