On Target
To foreigners, the country stinks

MALACAÑANG SAYS KAPAMPANgans are asking President Gloria to run for Congress next year.

Oh, yeah?

Are they really asking her to run, or she?s asking them to ?clamor? for her to run?

Her shattered credibility makes the Palace announcement sound like a joke.

* * *

If she files her candidacy for Congress next month, she should resign as President for delicadeza.

Her resignation will preclude suspicion she?s using her position to have an edge over her opponents, whoever they may be.
But knowing GMA, she won?t resign out of propriety.

?Delicadeza? and ?propriety? are not in the President?s vocabulary.
There?s a strong word to describe her lack of propriety in Filipino, but there?s no need to say it here since it would be mentioning the obvious.

We all know why she needs to be in Congress after stepping down from the presidency.

She feels that her fellow congressmen and women would protect her from all the criminal charges arising from her and her husband Mike Arroyo?s abuse of power.

What she doesn?t know is that as soon as she gets out of Malacañang, legislators who shield her from impeachment will no longer care for her.

Her allies in the House of Representatives are staunchly defending her because she gives them oodles and oodles of money.

When she?s no longer of any use to them, they will avoid her like the plague.

Two congressmen went to prison during their tenures after one was convicted of rape and the other of gun smuggling, and their colleagues in the House of Representatives were of no help.

Romeo Jalosjos of Zamboanga del Norte was convicted of raping a minor, while Nicanor de Guzman Jr. of Nueva Ecija was found guilty of gun smuggling.

If GMA gets convicted of plunder and other crimes that she and her husband Mike Arroyo would be charged with after the 2010 election, do you think her colleagues in the House of Representatives? granting she gets elected?can prevent her and her husband from going to prison?

Why is there an outbreak of leptosperosis in Metro Manila and other places hit by tropical storms ?Ondoy? and ?Pepeng??

Leptosperosis is a fatal disease caused by swallowing water or wading through floodwater that has rat urine.

Floods in many areas triggered the outbreak.

Rats, which inhabit very dirty places, and garbage are a deadly mix.

Leptosperosis breeds in unhygienic surroundings, and that is practically the whole country.

Remember the American actress, who visited Manila a couple of years ago and who commented that the city stank?

My nephew who was born in the US and who came here on vacation also made the same comment.

?Mommy, why does the place stink?? he asked my sister-in-law after they got out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminal building.

To foreigners, the country smells of garbage because we Filipinos live in filth.

We don?t smell the filth because we?ve gotten used to it.
