MANILA, Philippines -- A policeman on a motorcycle was killed after he was struck by a speeding truck in Ermita, Manila, Wednesday morning.
Senior Police Officer 2 Ferdie Alejandrino, who was assigned at the Manila Police District’s Traffic Enforcement Unit (MPD-TEU) and a resident of Lico corner Cavite Streets in Sta. Cruz, Manila, suffered severe head and body injuries.
He was later declared dead on arrival at the Philippine General Hospital.
Police said the victim had just left the MPD-TEU headquarters to attend a meeting at the National Capital Region Police Office headquarters in Bicutan, Taguig City, when the accident took place at around 11 a.m.
The driver of the truck, Emmanuel David, 44, a native of Dinggalan, Aurora, was arrested afterward, Senior Inspector Roberto Carlos Baldivas, MPD-TEU chief, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Investigation showed that the victim was on board his motorcycle and had just passed by San Marcelino Street corner United Nations Avenue when he was struck by the speeding truck.
David was arrested after Joselito Atienza, a taxi driver who witnessed the accident, reported it to a traffic enforcer.
Atienza and the traffic enforcer then gave chase, finally catching up with the truck driver on Osmeña Highway.
The police said they would file a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against David.
