MANILA, Philippines ? The Manila City government Tuesday closed down two boarding houses as part of a crackdown during the summer break on dormitories which operate illegally.
The city?s committee on dormitories served the closure order to Jaime Tan, the owner of the dormitories at 1019 and 1003-1005 Apacible St. in Ermita, after he repeatedly ignored the notices sent to him to comply with building regulations, City Administrator Jesus Mari Marzan said.
An inspection conducted by members of the committee showed that among the violations committed by Tan were operating without a business license and a sanitary permit. His dormitories also had overcrowded rooms that did not have proper ventilation.
Marzan said seven other closure orders were waiting to be served and that they were only waiting for the end of the grace period that they had given owners of boarding houses to comply with building regulations.
?We suggest that [the boarders] look for another place,? Marzan said. ?It?s vacation [time] anyway. At least before the next school year starts, we?ve wiped out the violators.?
