MANILA, Philippines – Guests at the upscale Discovery Suites hotel in the Ortigas district had to be evacuated Sunday night after a three-hour fire broke out from the sauna room on one of its floors, authorities said.
A volunteer fireman identified as Elmer Matubang sustained small scratches but nobody else was injured in the fire that started at about 6:45 p.m. at the fourth floor of the hotel on ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
The damage was placed at P100,000.
FO1 Salvador Norberte, arson investigator, said the fire originated from the sauna room in the wellness and fitness center of the hotel, although it was not yet clear what had sparked it.
Hotel guests calmly walked out of the building after they were asked to vacate the premises, investigators said.
The blaze reached the second alarm and was put out at 9:21 p.m.
The firefighters could not immediately contain the fire because of the thick smoke billowing from inside the building, so they broke the outside windows to get in, investigators said.
