MANILA, Philippines? With the start of the holidays, a miniature city has risen in the middle of an 80-square meter area in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig?all aglow with lights to welcome Christmas and spread the spirit of sharing.
The Lego Christmas Land, made entirely from Lego blocks, can be found in front of the Hobbes and Landes shop on Bonifacio High Street. It will remain there until January, according to Patrick Pesengco, Hobbes director and one of the people behind the festive display.
?We came up with this project to start an annual Christmas tradition and at the same time, we would like to increase awareness on the plight of children,? Pesengco told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a recent interview.
With the theme ?Building a better future for Filipino children one brick at a time,? the project aims to raise funds with the United Nations Children?s Fund and World Vision as beneficiaries.
The display was inspired by the Lego Sports City which was set up in Hong Kong during the Beijing Olympics, Pesengco said. Lego enthusiasts built a smaller replica of the entire Olympic Village, including the renowned Bird?s Nest stadium and the Water Cube.
The Lego Christmas Land, on the other hand, shows an ideal community in an urban setting. Designed by Abesamis + Guererro, it features six-meter tall buildings side by side with low-rise structures like malls and houses.
In a nearby seaport, ships loaded with container vans are docked alongside luxury cruise liners. There is also an airport complete with air traffic controllers and planes landing or taking off from runways.
In addition, a mechanized train makes its way around the miniature community as lights of different colors flicker all over the display which includes Santa Claus figures.
The huge pieces in the collection came from Lego?s parent company in Denmark while the smaller structures were made by a group of Filipino Lego enthusiasts led by Vittorio Milanes and Jig Manaloto, said Mari Garcia, project manager of LAJ Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Lego.
?We hope the Christmas land would be an annual feature like the famous COD display,? Pesengco said, referring to the annual holiday show featuring moving mannequins which used to run at the COD Department Store in Cubao, Quezon City.
?The Lego Christmas Land is one of the exciting things to look forward to in Bonifacio Global City this Christmas season. Children most especially will enjoy it,? said Noel Kintanar, head of Fort Bonifacio Development Corp.?s commercial operations.
Like Pesengco, Kintanar said he hopes the display would become an annual event.
?Hopefully it becomes a great tradition just like the COD display and we hope to keep on improving on it, making it larger and involving more partners,? he added.
