MANILA, Philippines – Five of six suspects in the robbing and killing of an 86-year-old woman in Manila this week, including a 14-year-old boy, have been arrested, police reported Thursday.
Their arrest, however, did not seem to appease the victim’s neighbors who told the Inquirer they were still wondering how the suspects could have killed the old woman who regularly fed them in her home.
The victim, Amodina de Ocampo, was found stabbed to death on Wednesday morning inside her home at 2319 Zafiro St., San Andres Bukid.
Police immediately acted and nabbed in less than 24 hours Najier Bangola, 20, a neighbor of the victim and who allegedly led the break-in into the victim’s house.
Police said Bangola yielded three 14-karat rings stolen from the victim. Bangola also led the police to his companions, which also led to their arrest.
They were identified as Abdul Cair and Christian Ricafort, both 18; and Samandong Tiempo, 19. The 14-year-old was not identified, while police said they are now looking for a certain “Ariel” as the sixth suspect. All the suspects are neighbors of the victim.
Former barangay chair Antonio Dimaano told the Inquirer that De Ocampo frequently shared her food with neighbors, including Bangola, but most of the time, the old woman and her housemates kept to themselves.
“Every time there is an occasion or if they have plenty, Mamang (what De Ocampo is called by her neighbors) would give out food to her neighbors whom she knew had little,” Dimaano said.
Dimaano’s wife and current barangay chair Juvy Dimaano, for her part, said De Ocampo recently donated exercise equipment to the barangay. “She made other previous donations for the use of the barangay,” she pointed out. "They bit the hand that fed them," she added.
She also revealed that before the incident happened, Bangola had asked other neighbors if “Mamang” had a dog. “Why would he ask that if he was not planning on anything?” Dimaano claimed.
Manila Police District Homicide section head Chief Insp. Alberto Peco said Bangola had admitted breaking into the victim’s home and stabbing her to death.
Peco also said that the suspects did not even have a plan and that the robbery was spur of the moment decision. “This group was watching a shooting for a telenovela and Bangola, if they are to be believed, just turned to the others and told them that they should rob De Ocampo because she was rich,” he pointed out.
He further revealed that, based on Bangola’s statement, they never had the intention of killing the octogenarian. “They apparently felt they had to kill her because she knew them by name,” Peco said.
Apart from the rings, police recovered from the group P5,700 cash. Peco said the suspects have disposed of the other pieces of jewelry they stole.
The four suspects are in the custody of the MPD pending the filing of robbery with homicide charges before the city prosecutor’s office against them. Peco said the 14-year-old boy will be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
