MANILA, Philippines?Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales Sunday called on residents of the Baseco Compound to engage in ?clean fun? as he noted the growing population in the area.
Rosales, who celebrated Mass in a covered court inside the compound, said that while the Church was willing to provide necessities which the government was unable to, it could not due to its limited funds.
He also cited the Church?s policy of encouraging people to be more responsible instead of always relying on charity.
Rosales voiced his approval for the Manila City government?s plan to put up a playground in the area as well as in other marginalized communities.
?Thanks to the wisdom of Mayor (Alfredo) Lim, the playground would also serve the older residents because they would accompany their children there. The adults or couples only know one way of [having] fun?inside their rooms, their bed. That is not right,? the cardinal said.
?This way, the adults will join their children in clean fun,? he added.
At the same time, Rosales emphasized to parents the importance of ensuring their child?s education, saying that ?true parents know how to sacrifice for their child.?
The cardinal also praised Lim for his ?imagination? as he told reporters after the mass, ?How do you teach people to teach themselves? [Through] road improvements, the playgrounds, education. That?s the right way to do it.?
Lim, for his part, assured residents in the area that no eviction would be undertaken at the compound.
?If anybody even thinks of evicting you, I will be the first to make a move and oppose it,? he said.
?You cannot be evicted here,? the mayor stressed, as he revealed his administration?s plans to improve the roads, drainage system, and construct more playgrounds in other depressed areas.
