Makati City honors fallen policeman

The City of Makati on Monday paid tribute to a policeman who was killed in the line of duty in an armed encounter with suspected robbers last week. During the funeral services at the Makati police headquarters, Mayor Jejomar Binay expressed his condolences to the family of PO3 Warren Balang. ?He will serve as an inspiration to others as a man who gave his life to preserve the peace and protect the innocent in Makati,? he added. Binay said the city lost a true public servant in Balang, who was shot dead after he tried to confront a group of men acting suspiciously near the United Coconut Planters Bank on P. Burgos Street in Barangay Poblacion on Aug. 28. ?We have lost a brave and selfless man but his sacrifice will not be for naught,? Binay said. DJ Yap

Cop against fellow cop

A policeman has filed charges of oral defamation and grave threat against his colleague at the Quezon City prosecutor?s office after the latter allegedly challenged him to a duel. PO2 Wilfredo Millari said PO1 Charlie Villanueva of the Computer Services Unit in Camp Crame accosted him as he was about to ride on his motorcycle at 2:30 p.m. last Tuesday at the Quezon City Hall. Villanueva pointed his gun at him while shouting invectives at him the whole time and daring him to draw his gun, Millari said in his complaint. Villanueva, however, denied all the charges against him and refused to give an explanation for his action. Jeannette I. Andrade

2 suspected robbers arrested

Police have arrested a teenager and a man suspected of being among a group that robbed an eatery in Parañaque City on Sunday morning. The 16-year-old boy and Enrique Salameda were positively identified by their victims as the ones who took P20,000 in cash from the GoodAh Restaurant on President?s Avenue in Barangay BF Homes. Supt. Ronald Estilles, city police chief, said the boy was picked up in Imus, Cavite, while Salameda was arrested near his house in Parañaque City. Police said they were still looking for the two other members of the group, one of whom raped the restaurant?s pregnant cashier. Julie M. Aurelio
