Police warns against woman robber posing as maid

MANILA, Philippines – Be careful about the people you let into your home.

The Manila Police District gave this warning to residents after a woman posing as a housemaid, and long wanted for a series of robbery incidents, struck again.

Her modus operandi involved applying as a housemaid; once hired, she would rob her employers of cash and valuables.

Police said the suspect had already victimized several Chinese-Filipino families in the Binondo and Sta. Cruz areas in Manila.

The latest incident happened last Tuesday.

Police said the suspect initially befriended security guard Angelito Calderon who is detailed at a condominium building in Sta. Cruz.

Calderon told police that the suspect approached him saying she was looking for a job. He said she asked if he knew somebody who wanted to hire a housemaid.

Since the woman looked “friendly and nice,” Calderon recommended her to Vina Sy, who immediately hired the suspect.

Last Tuesday, while Calderon was out, her nanny, Ruiza Soberano, had stomach pains after eating the food the suspect prepared.

Unknown to Soberano, the suspect took advantage of the time she was inside the comfort room and took with her some valuables, police said.

The same thing happened to at least three other families in Binondo and Sta. Cruz a few months ago, police added.

Supt. Nelson Yabut, chief of the MPD Meisic station, said the victims provided them with the same description of the suspect. “We believe the suspect whom the victims were referring to was one and the same.”

“The suspect was described as from 23 to 25 years old, about 4’11 to 5’2” tall, plump and with a fair complexion,” the police official said. “We advise residents to be careful in dealing with those applying as housemaids so they won’t be the next victim.”
