Man shot dead after hacking 3 persons

MANILA, Philippines – A 38-year-old man attacked with a knife three persons, including a 7-month-old baby boy, in Binondo, Manila, Wednesday morning before he was shot dead by a policeman.

Supt. Nelson Yabut, chief of the Manila Police District’s Meisic station, said Arvin Tan, a businessman, died on arrival at the Metropolitan Hospital of a lone gunshot wound in the lower jaw.

Yabut said the suspect tried to attack PO3 Eduardo Belamide who rushed to the scene, prompting the policeman to shoot him in self-defense.

The three victims were the suspect’s niece, Cindy Tan, 17; her 7-month-old baby, Mark Christian Rosete and their housemaid, Irene Pelaez, 30. They remain confined in a hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Although Tan and Pelaez were reported to be in stable condition, Rosete remains under observation for a deep cut in the head, police said.

An investigation showed that the incident happened at around 8:15 a.m. in the suspect’s house on corner Tomas Pinpin and Gandara Streets.

Pelaez told the police that before the incident, the suspect was pacing the living room, and appeared to be bothered, before he took two knives from the kitchen.

Sensing danger, Pelaez said she informed Tan about the suspect’s behavior, but the young woman ignored her warning.

The two women, however, were alarmed when they saw the suspect go inside the baby’s room and attack him with a knife. They added that they tried to stop him but the suspect turned to them instead.
Pelaez said she managed to escape from the building and ask for help from Rosano Diopeta, a janitor, who reported the incident to the police.

Responding policemen said they forcibly opened the door to the suspect’s house. But when the suspect tried to attack them, Belamide shot him, hitting him in the jaw.
