Baby’s body found on top of trash mound

The body of a newborn baby was found on top of a mound of trash in Sta. Mesa, Manila, early Tuesday morning. Chief Insp. Dominador Arevalo, head of the Manila Police District homicide division, said the baby girl was discovered by a scavenger around 7:30 a.m. on top of a heap of garbage at the corner of Ramon Magsaysay Avenue and Baldonido Streets. The scavenger told police that he was sifting through the garbage when he noticed a styrofoam box. When he opened it, he said he found the body of a baby wrapped in a newspaper and yellow plastic bag. The baby also had a newly cut umbilical cord, police added. Last week, three babies were allegedly thrown away in three different areas of Manila. One was thrown out from the window of a condominium unit in Binondo, the other in a canal in Sta. Mesa and another from a speeding taxicab in Paco. While the third baby miraculously survived, the two others were found dead. Tina G. Santos

Construction worker killed, 2 more hurt

A 29-year-old construction worker was killed while two others were seriously wounded when at least 10 men armed with knives and guns attacked them as they were drinking before dawn Tuesday in Novaliches, Quezon City. Erwin Manalang, a laborer of the TTC Construction and a resident of Caloocan City, was declared dead on arrival at the Quezon City General Hospital from gunshot wounds in the chest. His coworkers, Andy Lumangay, 29, and Ronnie Domicel, 21, remain hospitalized for bullet wounds and knife wounds they sustained during the attack. Reports from the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) said the incident happened at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday outside the victims’ quarters on Bethzaida Street, Tawid Sapa in Barangay San Agustin. PO3 Joseph Diño of the QCPD-CIDU said the workers had been hired to lay pipes on the street for Maynilad Water Services Inc. The three men were drinking with other coworkers when around 10 men threw bottles and stones at them. When the victims stepped out of their barracks, they were attacked by the group with knives and improvised shotguns. Diño said that the motive for the attack remains unclear with QCPD-CIDU personnel conducting their investigation. Jeannette I. Andrade

A man was electrocuted when he attempted to scale an electrically charged wire fence in Quezon City Tuesday morning. Elesio Velez, 21, a resident of Waling-Waling Street, Botanical Garden, Barangay Central in Diliman, was found lying face down on the ground beside the fence with blood oozing from his ears. PO3 Joseph Diño of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) said Velez was found by his cousin, Roger Canaling, at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Rose Street, not too far away from the victim’s house. Dino added that barangay watchmen tried to save Velez by bringing him to the East Avenue Medical Center, but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival by attending doctors. Jeannette I. Andrade
