On May 12, 1962, then President Diosdado Macapagal issued Proclamation No. 28 changing the date of the country’s independence day from July 4 – the date the Philippines won its independence from the United States in 1946 – to June 12, when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo declared the country free from Spain in 1898.
