MANILA, Philippines ? Alioden Dalaig, the chief legal officer of the Commission on Elections, was killed by an unknown assailant at the corner of Pedro Gil and M. H. del Pilar Streets on Nov. 10, 2007.

The 64-year-old Dalaig was about to cross the street t across the Hyatt Hotel and Casino when he was shot once in the chest with a .45 caliber pistol at around 7:30 p.m.

Police ruled out robbery as the motive for the killing as the victim had around P300,000 in his pocket which was later turned over to his family. His cell phone was also not taken by his attacker.

His wife, Filomena, told the police that her husband had received death threats before the incident.

At that time, Dalaig was in the news after controversial Maguindao election supervisor Lintang Bedol was placed in his custody. Bedol was then set to post bail in the case filed against him for his supposed involvement in election irregularities in Maguindanao.

Upon Dalaig?s death, Wynne Asdala, acting director III of the Comelec law department, took over the victim?s post.

Dalaig was one of two Comelec officials gunned down on that day.

The head of the Comelec office in Bacoor, Cavite, Joseph del Rosario, 46, was also shot dead at close range by an unknown gunman while he was drinking with friends inside a house in General Trias, Cavite.
