MANILA, Philippines – Streetlights on Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City will be turned off from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on March 29 as part of the city government’s share in addressing the worldwide problem of climate change.
Despite initial objections from operators of hotels, restaurants and other businesses on the strip, Pasay Mayor Wenceslao Trinidad said the city government was eventually able to get them to agree to the move.
“The businesses initially objected to it because they thought the businesses would be affected,” Trinidad said.
“But we agreed that it would just be the streetlights,” he added.
Hundreds of streetlights will also be turned off on Libertad and Gil Puyat Avenue.
The move is part of the city government’s participation in Earth Hour, a global movement that urges people to turn off their lights and electrical gadgets for one hour on March 29.
The Worldwide Fund for Nature recently announced that Pasay would be the “flagship city” for the event, along with several cities in Europe, North America and Asia.
