Iraqi officials say back-to-back explosions in a Shiite district of Baghdad have killed at least 10 people and wounded 35.

Iraqi officials say a parked car bomb has killed three people and wounded 21 south of Baghdad. A police officer says Monday’s explosion took place in a busy street in the southern city of Hillah where local government offices are located. He says some Shiite pilgrims were there making their way to the nearby city of Karbala to mark the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein.
Bombings struck several areas in Baghdad and to the north Thursday, killing at least 30 people in the first major attacks in Iraq in nearly a month. The violence stoked fears that insurgents were trying to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government amid rising sectarian tensions.
An Al-Qaeda front group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for the wave of terrifying attacks that rocked Baghdad last week and killed 69 people.
