SANTIAGO, Chile?More than 200 inmates in Chile fled their prison on Saturday after the powerful earthquake caused a wall to crumble, jail authorities said.

The falling wall seriously injured one of the guards at the prison in the central town of Chillan and 269 prisoners poured out, said prison police chief Alejandro Jimenez, as quoted by the La Tercera newspaper's website.

Authorities managed to recapture around 60 of the inmates, he said.

The 600 inmates still in custody were being transferred to a prison in the region's main city of Concepcion, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) to the east.

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck early in the morning, killing at least 214 people.
