PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea— (UPDATE) A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea Tuesday but caused no tsunami or damage, seismologists said.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8:28 a.m. (2228 GMT Monday), 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of Arawa at a depth of 33 kilometers.
"There was moderate shaking, no damage and no tsunami," Lawrence Anton, a seismologist at the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea, told AFP.
Papua New Guinea sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where continental plates meet. The region is frequently struck by earthquakes.
Geoscience Australia measured the tremor at 6.6 magnitude with a depth of only seven kilometers.
