Indonesia detains 14 Greenpeace activists

JAKARTA-- Indonesia detained 14 mostly foreign Greenpeace activists Wednesday as they protested against a big pulp and paper company in this country known for its greenhouse gas emissions, the group said.

The activists chained themselves to a crane at Asia Pulp and Paper's (APP) port facilities in Riau province, Sumatra, while displaying banners that read: "Forest Destruction: You can stop this."

"Fourteen of our activists have been detained as we're protesting to halt the export of pulp and stop any further clearing of forests," Greenpeace Southeast Asia communications director Martin Baker told AFP.

"Four activists are still on the crane. They are comfortable there and they are committed to stay there as long as possible."

He said nine of the detained activists were foreigners, including people from Australia, Canada, Germany and India.

Indonesia deported 13 foreign Greenpeace activists and two foreign journalists, an Italian and an Indian, earlier this month after a similar protest in Riau province.

Rampant deforestation has made Indonesia the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, according to most estimates.
