BEIJING, China (via PLDT) -- (UPDATE) Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday that China's food exports would meet international standards and win the trust of people around the world.

"We will use our actions and high quality of our food products to win the trust and confidence of Chinese people and people around the world," Wen told reporters at the end of a two-day summit of Asian and European leaders here.

He pledged Chinese food exports would "comply with the standards of importing countries.?

?Colleagues, I would like to make a solemn statement that the Chinese government attaches grave importance to food safety because it concerns not only the Chinese people, but also consumers all over the world,? Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said at the closing press conference at the Great Hall of the People here.

With him were European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

?We will seriously deal with this contaminated milk powder (problem),? the premier said. ?We will punish those who are directly responsible for this.?

Milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine has killed several Chinese babies and caused tens of thousands of Chinese babies to be hospitalized.

Milk and milk products exported from China has been banned from many supermarkets around the world because of this.
