ATHENS -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit central Greece late Wednesday without claiming victims or causing damage, Athens Observatory said.
The epicenter of the quake, described as "strong" by the observatory's geodynamic institute, was located at Kamena Vourla in the Phthiotide region, 112 kilometers (70 miles) north of Athens.
Recorded at 11:59 p.m. (2059 GMT) Wednesday, the tremor was felt in Athens as well as the center of the country.
Greece experiences more seismic activity than any other country in Europe, accounting for half of Europe's recorded quakes.
A 6.5 magnitude quake on June 8 killed two people and injured about 140 in the northern Peloponnese.
