WASHINGTON -- Here are the latest provisional delegate counts for Democratic presidential candidates, compiled by independent website RealClearPolitics.com, following Tuesday's presidential primaries in Indiana and North Carolina.
Barack Obama swept North Carolina while Clinton eked a narrow victory in Indiana.
Democrats Totals:
Barack Obama -- 1,842 including 257 superdelegates
Hillary Clinton -- 1,692 including 271 superdelegates
At least 2,025 delegates are needed to win the Democratic nomination for president. Neither candidate can cross the finish line simply by accruing elected delegates in the remaining six contests of the 2008 primary season.
Both Clinton and Obama are looking to the Democratic superdelegates -- party luminaries who can vote how they like -- to cast their deciding votes.
While many superdelegates remain uncommitted, under party rules even the pledged superdelegates can change candidates if they please.
A total of 4,049 delegates, including 796 superdelegates, will be seated at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, from August 25 to 28.
Arizona Senator John McCain has already secured the 1,191 delegates needed to become his party's presidential nominee, ahead of the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota, September 1 to 4.
