JAKARTA -- A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday but no immediate reports of damages or injuries were reported, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The centre of the quake, which struck at 11.23 am (0223 GMT), was about 85 kilometers (53 miles) northwest of North Maluku province's provincial capital Ternate, an official at the agency said.

The quake was felt in Ternate, but there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 5.1.

A tsunami warning was not issued for the tremor, which struck at a depth of 21 kilometers.

An official at the agency said that a 5.5-magnitude quake hit about 30 kilometers away some 30 minutes earlier.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet, and where earthquakes are a regular and often deadly occurrence.
