Janitor shoots prisoner dead in Davao del Sur

BANSALAN, Davao del Sur – A prisoner was shot dead for still unknown reasons by the janitor of this town’s police station around 6:55 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Senior Inspector Deozar Almaza, Bansalan police chief, said Restituto Malait was inside his cell when Gibsam Fernandez suddenly appeared and shot him with a .45 caliber pistol.

Almaza said Fernandez took the service firearm of Senior Police Officer 2 Florante Mancera, who was having breakfast in the station’s kitchen and laid his gun down on a table, and used it to kill Malait.

Fernandez immediately fled, Almaza said.

A hunt for the suspect has been mounted, Almaza said.
