PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Philippines -- Philippine Coast Guard personnel and civilian volunteers have been on close watch over a pod of dolphins which appeared to have been stranded in the shallow waters of Baquid Bay in Coron, even as two dolphins were reported to have died as of Sunday, local authorities said.
The group said they were awaiting calmer waters to try and guide into deeper waters the dolphins who appeared to have been disoriented and stressed.
"At least six individuals are currently just wading in waist deep water very close to the shore and they appear to be very weak and disoriented. There were sightings of a bigger pod around the area of the bay," Maricar Daquioag, a volunteer working with local authories, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Daquioag said they confirmed at least two deaths of marine mammals earlier this week. The stranded dolphins have been identified to be Indo Pacific bottlenose dolphins by fishing communities around Baquid Bay.
Daquioag, a marine specialist, said they could not ascertain the cause of the stranding but added that that pod may have been trapped inside the bay while in pursuit of schools of fish that they prey upon.
