MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE 3) Tropical Depression “Urduja” has weakened into a low-pressure area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Wednesday afternoon.
In its 5 p.m. weather update, the center of the low-pressure area was estimated to be 350 kilometers east of Surigao City.
The weather system is forecast to move east at 11 kilometers per hour.
PAGASA also lowered all storm signal warnings that were earlier issued.
Rains from “Urduja,” the 21st tropical cyclone to enter the country’s area of responsibility and the third this month, had caused heavy flooding in parts of Cagayan de Oro.
PAGASA Deputy Administrator Nathaniel Cruz said they are watching another weather system, with international name “Nida,” that might enter the Philippines’ area of responsibility (PAR) this weekend.
But Cruz said they expect “Nida,” to be named “Vinta” when it enters PAR, to pass through the northeast corner of PAR while moving northwest.
Aldzar Aurelio of PAGASA’s weather forecasting section said rains can be expected in Palawan and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao because of the prevalence of the intertropical convergence zone (ITZC), a region near the equator where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet, causing the formation of strings of clouds and low-pressure areas.
These parts will experience cloudy weather with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. These conditions can become widespread rains over parts of Mindanao.
A low-pressure area is a lower form of a tropical cyclone.
